So you want to grow some vegetables, but you don't have much room? All you have to do is get a little creative. Many vegetables (and herbs) can be grown in pots, window boxes and hanging baskets.
Attractive "combination planters" can be created by mixing two or more plants that are complimentary to each other. Onions or radishes sowed with lettuce in a 10" or larger pot makes a nice salad bowl mix. Herbs, as well as strawberries, can be planted in a strawberry jar that will require very little space. Even carrots can be grown in a pot and tomatoes in a hanging basket. Cucumbers can also be grown in a pot with a little support.
There are also dwarf varieties of vegetables that have been developed to grow smaller and bushier, making them perfect for gardeners with limited space.
Just because you don't have a large planting area, you should not be discouraged from growing vegetables for your family. Whether you have a patio or small back yard, or are otherwise limited on space, you can still garden!
It's easy to learn what plants can be grown together to maximize your space. When purchasing seeds or starter plants, ask about space and water requirements to determine compatibility and proper arrangement.
Start small, with just a few favorites and you can make it work for you. The possibilities are endless when using containers to garden. |
