New Plants 2011
Because Southwood grows so much of its own product, we are able to stay on the forefront of the horticultural world. We can test new products as soon as they hit the market and choose the best ones to grow for our customers. Below are just a few of the brand new plants Southwood will be growing this season.
Superbells Punch Series

Superbells 'Coralberry Punch' (left) and 'Blackberry Punch’(right) are new wild color combinations from Proven Winners, the same breeder as the entire Superbells group. This line of striking bicolor flowers stands out from all the other calibrachoa Million Bells on the market with its deep colored throats and vibrant petals.
Dahlia 'Mystic Wonder'

‘Mystic Wonder’ is the latest addition to the Dahlia series and offers almost-black foliage as a backdrop for velvety-red flowers. These low-maintenance annuals perform well in the Tulsa area.
Ornamental Peppers 'Purple Flash'

'Purple Flash' pepper is a unique, exotic-looking plant for mixed containers and in-ground plantings. Its leaves are almost-black with flashes of bright purple and white. The plants are topped with small, round, glossy black fruits. 'Purple Flash' Peppers are very heat and drought tolerant, perfect for Tulsa summers.
Mimulus 'Curious Orange' and 'Curious Red'

With a long bloom period and long-lasting flowers, these Mimulus are truly exciting. They are well-branched and have uniquely shaped large flowers. These two are great garden performers.
Papyrus 'King Tut'

This exotic-looking beauty has a fantastic bold form and strong appeal. Its pendulous leaves sit on tall, upright stems. 'King Tut' is a rapid grower that makes an impressive centerpiece in the landscape. It likes wet places like water gardens or waterside and is perfect for containers without drainage holes. This papyrus is easy to grow and untroubled by pests or diseases.
Bidens 'Goldilocks Rocks'

'Goldilocks Rocks' brings a bouquet of sunshine to hanging baskets, container combos or the landscape. It has fern-like leaves with a mounding habit making it a great 'spiller' plant. It is heat and drought tolerant and is covered in bright gold flowers all season long.
Petunia 'Black Velvet' and 'Phantom'

These two new Petunias have a totally unique color, black! 'Black Velvet' is the truest black petunia variety on the market and makes a great accent with bright reds, pinks, and whites. 'Phantom' has black edges and a creamy yellow star detail in the center, which makes it really stand out in combinations. These are what we at Southwood like to call "Man Flowers."
Petunia 'Supertunia Pretty Much Picasso'

Petunia ‘Pretty Much Picasso’ is a new multicolored Supertunia with a unique color combination; violet purple interior edged by chartreuse with dark purple veining radiating from the center of each bloom. The color is stable, meaning the color pattern will be the same on each plant produced. In addition to the unusual color combination, ‘Pretty Much Picasso’ has a vigorous trailing habit that is great in hanging baskets and containers.
Colocasia 'Coffee Cups'

Colocasia 'Coffee Cups' makes a stunning 6' tall clump of glossy olive green elephant ear leaves with a dark purple-black stem. Its unique feature is the dramatic leaf cupping. As the leaf fills with water, the stem gives enough for the leaf to dump out its catch before refilling...fascinating.
Coreopsis 'Cranberry Ice'

Coreopsis 'Cranberry Ice' is an herbaceous perennial with a low mounding habit and excellent "flower power". Its deep coral-red petals are tipped in white speckles and surround a dark red disk with golden anthers, attracting butterflies and bees.
Echinacea 'Fatal Attraction'

The Echinacea 'Fatal Attraction' is a new perennial coneflower that we are very impressed with. Plants have slender near-black stems holding up vivid purplish-pink flowers. Blooms have two rows of petals giving them a very distinctive, full look.
Heuchera 'Autumn Leaves,' 'Lipstick,' 'Berry Smoothie' and 'Electric Lime'

'Autumn Leaves' 'Lipstick'

'Berry Smoothie' 'Electric Lime'
These four new Heucheras offer a full range of spectacular colors. You can use them to bring much needed color into your perennial shade garden. These Heucheras boast both flashy evergreen foliage and brightly colored flowers.
